HERStory
Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. was established on December 6, 1998 at the University of Houston by seventeen South Asian women who recognized the need for an organization to promote the advancement of South Asian women. Seventeen women from various backgrounds came together with the common goal of uniting women among the South Asian community. The Founders created the backbone of this sorority on the basis of the five pillars of Sisterhood, Respect, Loyalty, Honesty, and Friendship. They envisioned a sorority exceeding the typical notions of Greek life, having strengths as both a social and service organization, and creating women of culture, compassion, dignity, and fortitude. They sought an organization dedicated to unifying South Asian women, promoting children's literacy, and building leaders of both campus and cultural communities. Foreseeing rapid expansion of the sorority and acknowledging the need for a central governing entity, several alumni sisters took the initiative to form the first National Council of Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. - Founded on February 1, 2002 - National Council became the administrative and governing body of the sorority, possessing jurisdiction over all its components parts.
After only ten years, Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. has realized these dreams, expanding to become the largest, strongest, fastest-growing sorority of its kind, with over 1000+ members in over 30 chapters and colonies nationwide. DPO was the first South Asian interest sorority to expand nationally, to host a national conference, to create a national council, and to be nationally recognized by our philanthropic partners, Pratham USA and ASHA for Education.
The University of Texas Arlington Colony was founded on July 12, 2003. The four founding mothers, known as the ____ Line, sought to harness the pride and power of the South Asian female population at UTA. The result was the UTA Colony in Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. Nationwide. Seven lines later, twenty-five members strong, The University of Texas Arlington Colony continues to grow and represent on campus in Greek life as well as ISA events, and other social and service events.
We Dreamt, We Saw, We Conquered- We are Delta Phi Omega, sisters for life.
